If you are looking for a delicious, fully-catered breakaway from the city with lots of fresh mountain air and space this Easter, then Montusi Mountain Lodge, a luxurious sanctuary in the heart of the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg, is your spot.
With a plethora of April public holidays around the corner, and being just a short drive from Joburg and Durban, Montusi is an easy-to-get-to, relaxing escape from the city. And while it is best known for its tranquil setting and exquisite panoramic views, Montusi’s delicious, understated take on local-fusion cuisine is just another one of the endless reasons to visit.
Headed up by Chef Lungi, who trained under Chef Alex Poltera at Fern Hill Hotel Training College in Howick, each dish on the Montusi menu has been crafted with a South African twist ensuring an authentic culinary experience for their guests.
“One of our favourite dishes with both our local and international guests is the Grilled Kudu Loin served with mashed sweet potato, garlic vegetables and macadamia crumble. The dish is fusion-inspired, but by using Kudu and other South African ingredients we always stay true to our roots,” says Chef Lungi.
To keep things exciting for long-stay guests, Montusi also offers a different dinner menu for each day of the week. For returning guests, the menu is tweaked across the year ensuring ingredients are seasonal and sustainably sourced.
“Too often lodges and hotels are let down by their food and beverage offering,” says Lindsay du Plessis, Director at Montusi. “At Montusi, our priority is to create fresh, sustainably sourced, sumptuous food that is presented beautifully on the plate.”
Outside of meal times, the lodge offers guided daily walks and thrice-weekly trail runs, horse riding, fly fishing, tennis courts, lawn games, board games, swimming pool and occasional sunset yoga sessions. Guests can climb Montusi Peak, explore the Waterfall Cave, boulder hop up the river, tackle the 4×4 track, visit the bushmen paintings, organise a romantic picnic… the possibilities really are endless.
Whether you are visiting Montusi to eat, relax and unwind, or trail run to the tops of the surrounding peaks, there is something for everyone.
