Last week Mzansi Life headed to Silverstar Casino on R28 in Muldersdrift – as part of our Best of Joburg restaurants guide – to check out what The Hussar Grill has to offer. Upon our arrival, we immediately knew that the experience was going to be world-class. The atmosphere felt just so right for the evening – no wonder why they have gained respect of meat lovers over the years.

Our waitress provided us with the top-notch service. She was also able to explain how they attend to the maturation of all beef as well as how different cuts are trimmed and prepared. She brought us a large platter of various cuts – wisely aged for about 28 days – so that we can have an idea of the size and assortment before placing our orders.

For starters; we had chicken livers sautéed in sherry, garlic, onions, mixed herbs and peri-peri – and served with croûtes. Tantalisingly delicious trio of snails delectably drenched in three sauces – garlic butter, smoked paprika and rosemary compound butter, as well as blue cheese was also part of our starters.

For mains, my partner had Beef and Reef – fillet steak served with a half portion of Patagonian calamari in garlic butter, while I plunged in a perfectly aged and succulent T-Bone grilled to precision. Grilling in The Hussar Grill manner allows the cut of meat to soak up all the flavour from the bone and marrow within, while preventing the meat from drying up or being unevenly cooked. This results in meat being richer, juicier and packed with mouth-watering flavours.

The chef – Peter Erasmus – also treated us to a spectacular show of Hollandse Biefstuk – a pan-fried beef fillet studded with coarse black pepper and flambéed in brandy and butter – before serving it to customers.

For desserts, the restaurant offers a wide variety from finest in town baked cheesecake, crème brûlée, rich chocolate fondant served with vanilla pod-infused ice cream, and the extravagant Hussar Grill ice cream drizzled with signature dark chocolate sauce. Also on the offer is a classic treat vanilla ice cream and decadent chocolate sauce, as well as malva pudding – Mzansi’s traditional favourite.
The Hussar Grill’s reputation stems from our 55 year heritage combined with a real passion for people and commitment to serving only Class-A grain-fed beef and game. They believe in being more than just a restaurant that serves outstanding quality food – it’s about the entire Hussar Grill experience.
The restaurant has won many prestigious awards over the years, including being consistently ranked as one of South Africa’s best restaurants and steakhouses according to TripAdvisor, as well as the esteemed Diners Club Platinum Status Award for our wine selection.
The Hussar Grill in Silverstar Casino welcomes walk-ins, however, reservations are highly recommended.
