Competition in the premium hatch segment is getting harder than before as manufacturers are continuously developing luxurious and irresistible products. There are a number of choices to select from in this segment but the BMW 125i and few others provide appealing alternative.
I reviewed the BMW 125i M Sport automatic just before we closed for December holidays and was blown-away. What impressed me most was its superb drive quality and great performance – thanks to its twin-turbo engine that claims 6.4 seconds for 0-100km/h.
When it comes to safety, BMW doesn’t compromise. The 125i is fitted with high-performance M Sport brakes which provide outstanding deceleration. The exclusive blue painted fixed callipers are equipped with six pistons (front and rear combined).
The discs are particularly large with interior ventilation, providing superior heat dissipation.
It is also equipped with six airbags, ABS, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, traction control, front and rear Park Distance Control as well as Park Assist that deals with blind objects.
I was able to access the BMW 125i’s multifunction buttons mounted on the steering wheel without a hassle. These buttons can be used to operate a telephone, voice control and audio functions without lifting a hand from the steering wheel.
The independently adjustable sport seats for the driver and front passenger feature numerous electric adjustment options, including backrest width and seat height. Together with adjustable thigh support, they provide excellent ergonomics and lateral support even in fast cornering.
The sport seats also increase legroom for those in the second row seats – thanks to BMW’s sophisticated design and three-dimensional contoured rear sides of the backrests.
The storage compartment package offers passengers a number of additional options for various objects in the passenger area and luggage section. It includes a folding cubicle on the driver-side instrument panel and cup holder inserts.
Other features include an additional 12 V power socket, built-in GPS system with real-time traffic information, cruise control with braking function, front armrest with sliding adjustment and electric glass sunroof.
The BMW 125i’s LED fog lights enables the driver to see better and drive more safely in extreme conditions. The flat halogen double round headlights accentuate the front’s athletic look.
The electric glass roof allows airflow to be regulated, creating a pleasant in-car climate and integrated wind deflector guarantees a high level of acoustic comfort.
The 125i features 18-inch double-spoke alloy wheels that add sportiness to the car.
On the road
The twin-turbo engine brings a new wave of technology and performance to the BMW 125i M Sport. The engine features nippy power delivery and good responsiveness even at a low engine speed.
The standard Driving Experience Control lets the driver choose between the standard comfort, efficient Eco Pro, sport and sport + modes. The Start Stop technology helps conserve fuel in close quarter driving.
The 8-speed automatic sport transmission sets a new benchmark in terms of dynamic performance and efficiency, while the fast engine speed transitions and precise transmission turning guarantee unbelievably smooth gear shifts.
What I like about the car is that it feels safe and handles well on tight corners. The M Sport suspension also reduces body roll and improves agility.
