South Africa – The famed East London Grand Prix Circuit, high speeds, the notorious Potter’s Pass and Rifle Bend – this street circuit provides a lovely view of the sea, but it is one that few racers get to enjoy as all their concentration is required to stay on the road on this challenging track.
Round four of the Super Series takes place in East London on Saturday, 5 July, and the Engen Xtreme team arrives at the event with a strong lead in the 2014 Bridgestone Production Car Championship.
Michael Stephen (A1) has built up a 14 point lead on his rivals over the first three rounds of the championship this season. This gives him an edge at a circuit that favours horsepower, but throws in a few technical challenges just to keep the racers on their toes.
The East London circuit is the only track in the country which serves as a public road during the week and becomes a race track on the weekends. It has a long motorsport heritage, having served as a venue for many international events – and international motorsport stars – over the decades and the race meeting in July will add to its modern motorsport history.
“The extra straight line speed of the BMWs could prove to be a threat in East London on those long straights,” says Stephen. “There are, however, many opportunities for us in the Engen Xtreme Audi S4 quattros to gain an advantage – through Potter’s, accelerating out of the hairpins and through the twisty and bumpy esses. We are confident in our ability to challenge for race wins on the day.”
Stephen’s teammate, Simon Moss (A38), has showed steady improvement through the first three rounds, even scoring a bonus point in the Port Elizabeth event for the fastest lap recorded in race two – Stephen claimed the bonus point and fastest lap overall on the day in race one. As he steadily works his way up the order during his first season in the Bridgestone Production Car Championship, Moss is adapting to the fast pace with every round.
The East London event will see the Engen Xtreme racers again pushing hard to achieve their respective goals, with Moss racing to work his way up the order and Stephen concentrating on building his championship lead as he aims for a fourth consecutive title win.
Two determined racers, one high-speed track and a field of talented racing drivers – a recipe for a weekend of hot motorsport action in East London, and the Engen Xtreme racers will be right in the thick of it with their Audi S4 quattros.
