There is great beauty to be found in simplicity. It exudes intimacy and sophistication. That’s Grei at the Saxon which guarantees succulent, textural and delicious dishes created by Head Chef, Candice Philip.
Grei, which loosely translates from Portuguese as “a society of people” blends together Chef Candice’s love of unusual pairings, her passion for herbaceous flavours and her signature style of intricately-plated dishes. Appropriately, her menu has the aroma and flavour of the herbs running through it.
Dishes feature unusual pairings and natural, juicy flavours. The menu highlights the three key flavours from each dish and conveys a different colour with each course. It is a six-course tasting menu, paired with a combination of international and local wines. There is also be a non-alcoholic pairing option as well as vegetarian- and pescatarian-suited menus.
Morning and Afternoon Tea is an elegant ritual steeped in tradition and one of the Saxon’s specialities. A sophisticated experience awaits you in the Piano Lounge, the ideal venue for taking a much-needed break from your busy day to catch up with friends over a cup of perfectly infused tea.
Whether you prefer savoury or sweet items, the pastry kitchen’s handcrafted decadent delights will be the perfect accompaniment to your morning or afternoon tea experience. Every delicate bite-sized treat is fashioned according to the team’s exceptional standards, using only the finest imported and local ingredients.
There is a delicious cold buffet with all you can imagine, a plated main meal and the renowned dessert assortment expertly prepared by our Pastry team. It is served on the Fig Terrace or in Qunu. Qunu extends a warm African welcome, enticing you with its rich surroundings, red tones, woven lampshades and an ambient glow, enhanced by the remarkable hanging gardens.
Qunu pays homage to its South African roots, being named in honour of our beloved elder statesman former President Nelson Mandela’s country home in the Eastern Cape, and takes you on the ultimate African grill experience.
Beyond the hanging gardens the doors open onto the Fig Terrace where guests can dine under the striking canopy of fig trees. The Terrace is the central meeting point of the Saxon. From dawn to dusk it is the perfect setting for relaxation and taking in the abundant birdlife while enjoying a refreshing cup of tea, cocktail or a delicious lunch.
Last year, Grei was nominated as World’s Leading Fine Dining Hotel Restaurant 2018 by the World Travel Awards.
