Consider it a bird oasis in the urban jungle, and the only bird park of its kind in Africa. Montecasino’s Bird Park is home to over 100 unique and exotic bird species, reptiles, and small animals. Get an eyeful of pelicans, flamingos, iguanas and even a sloth from the elevated wooden walkways overlooking the aviaries.
Take a leisurely stroll through the amazing gardens that boast “the largest, most diverse private collection of South African cycads in the world”. After some exploring, settle down for lunch at the Flamingo Café and appreciate the sights and sounds around you.
Gold Reef City
The Gold Reef City theme park, located in central Johannesburg, is built around an authentic 19th century gold mine, and brings together fascinating historical attractions with some of the most thrilling rides in the southern hemisphere. For a day of frenetic family fun, it cannot be beat.
It is this combination of attractions that makes the amusement park such a huge hit with families. While the older folk delve into the history of the City of Gold, the younger generation can enjoy their adrenaline fix on more than 30 heart-stopping adventure rides.
When you want to entertain and educate the kids, the birthplace of mankind is an absolute must-visit. Start at the incredible Maropeng Visitor Centre to get an overview of mankind’s origins. Your tour will start with a boat ride on an artificial lake – guaranteed to be a hit with the kids in particular – before you enter the exhibition area that leads you through highlights of our evolutionary journey.
Just across the road, you can enter the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves, where famous fossil discoveries have been made such as those of “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot”, the latter being an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton dating back about three million years.
