Flight Centre South Africa has unveiled plans for a new mega-cruise ship, The Captain, which will operate a series of South Africa-themed domestic sailings between Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town from December 25, 2019. The Flight Centre Travel Group is the first South African travel agency group to purchase a cruise ship.
“We have seen cruise sales skyrocket in the South African market. The value for money that cruises offer for South Africans travelling on the rand is incredible,” says Andrew Stark, Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) Managing Director, Middle East and Africa. “We believe we have a unique product that South African holidaymakers will identify with and love.”
Planned onboard highlights and first-at-sea features include a touch rugby field, cricket academy for the kids, vineyard and beer tent and private balconies with braai areas. The 115-passenger ship, which will be known as ‘The Captain’, will have a South African flag design, which will be carried through the interior.
“We are always seeking out ways to innovate and offer our clients new and amazing travel experiences that exceed expectation. We saw a gap in the market, and it made good business sense to buy a cruise ship for our proudly South African customers,” said Stark.
Renovations include plans for a sun deck and two swimming pools, and the enlargement of the ship’s onboard nightclub Eish!. Guests can look forward to more mzansi-themed party nights and signature red Flight Centre cocktails.
Flight Centre plans to add longer regional sailings to popular cruise destinations, such as Seychelles. “We’ll operate back-to-back itineraries because we know our passengers won’t want to leave!” Stark revealed.
The Seychelles Tourism Board is said to be delighted with Flight Centre’s plans. Bookings are available exclusively through Flight Centre.
