Potchefstroom based elite Maison de Fleur will be hosting classical opera music evenings every second-month commencing on 26 August. The evenings will be hosted in conjunction with Tenor Stéfan Louw.
Louw started his career as a member of the State Theatre Opera Chorus and made his debut in a supporting role in 1999 as Beppe in the opera I Pagliacci. It was for this role that he was awarded the prestigious FNB Vita Opera Award for Best Newcomer.
In his 20-year career he has performed in more than 30 different operas, a total of more than 200 performances, and some 150 plus performances of oratorio and opera galas. In 2006 the Sunday Times wrote that his voice should be declared a national treasure.
He made his international debut in 2008 singing Pollione in the opera Norma in Vichy, France, followed by Radames in the opera Aida in Dijon, also in France. Stéfan is also the founder of two of Gauteng’s opera companies: Sempre Opera and Big Wig Opera.
He is still actively involved with the latter where he made his debut as director in the opera L’elisir d’amore at the Roodepoort Theatre in July last year.
This series of performances at Maison de Fleur will alternate between opera concerts, lieder recitals, oratorio, and even chorus works. Louw, who resides in Parys just a stone’s throw from Potchefstroom, is excited at launching the series of concerts at Maison de Fleur.
“I have always had the idea in my head to start a ‘Stéfan Louw and Friends’ concert series,” he says.
“The classical evenings at Maison de Fleur every second month provides me with an opportunity to share the stage with friends who not only have established careers, but also with friends who are students at the North-West University’s faculty of Arts. Some of the country’s best opera singers come from the NWU and it would be a pleasure to provide an opportunity for its students to perform alongside existing South African opera talent.”
This first evening of classical music will feature only Louw. He will be bringing the audience all the popular tenor arias like La donna e mobile from the opera Rigoletto by Verdi, Una furtiva lagrima from the opera L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti, and E lucevan le stelle from the opera Tosca by Puccini.
