Last weekend we went to Vanderbijlpark to review one of Emerald Resort & Casino’s restaurants, the High Stakes, located just off the casino floor. We were impressed by a number of things including the classy environment and quality of service received from one of the longest serving attendant by the name of Debbie. The faultlessly laid restaurant is divided into three sections: the main dining area, smokers’ section and the bar zone.
We had a three-course meal and the food was on point. We also didn’t wait long between meals.
The starters were delightful and presentation mouth-watering. We had the Portuguese chicken livers grilled on a hot skillet, laced with peri-peri and basil relish. We also had potato gnocchi sautéed in butter, biltong, feta and black pepper, drizzled with blue cheese cream and basil pesto.
Other starters on the offer include traditional escargots, duo of mushrooms, curried prawn risotto, duo prawn platter with roasted avocado and soup of the day.
The Main course meals were succulent and nicely garnished. We had the chef’s choice of 250g rump chargrilled to perfection topped with prawns, chilli brandy sauce with truffle mash and panache of vegetables. We also had 200g beef fillet crusted with black pepper topped with Cape brandy and mustard sauce – also served with panache of vegetables.
Other options on the chef’s choice include bacon, gorgonzola and red onion rump, as well as mini pork roast.
The High Stakes restaurant makes the best dessert in the Vaal and serves various collection including Frangelico white chocolate mousse, malva pudding, fruits galore, cheese and biscuit platter, after dinner mint, Kahlua cup and Turkish delight.
We had deliciously prepared desserts including the deconstructed lemon meringue made with flexi lemon curd, toasted meringue, coconut biscuit soil and fresh mint ice cream, as well as hot espresso poured over vanilla ice cream and served with amaretto biscuits (Affogato).
The High Stakes restaurant is strictly for those over the age of 18. It offers indulgent gourmet cuisine and an impeccable selection of fine wines. It is part of Emerald Resort & Casino situated on the lush banks of the Vaal River. The extensive property, along 7km’s of river frontage, is the ideal location for a business breakaway, corporate or private event, team building conference, or a fun-filled family getaway.
