The first season on Coke Studio will end with a bang tonight when Karabo Motjuwadi, aka Kayrab Mayrab, and Tlotleho Mohlahlane, aka Clu perform their song titled ‘On My Life’ that was created in three days.
The pair were taken under the wing of producer, Mpho Pholo – aka 37mph – which was Kayrab’s favourite part of his whole Coke Studio experience. He had known 37mph for more than 10 years but had never had the chance to work with him.
Coke Studio presents artists from different genres and pairs them up, fuse their styles and encourage them come up with an entirely new track in just three days.
The entire song-making process, from start to finish, is caught on camera, giving audiences a “fly-on-the-wall” look into how the music is made. Viewers can watch their favourite musicians in action, witness all the behind-the-scenes drama and most importantly, listen to each artist perform their fusion track for the first time.
For Kayrab, his dreams of being a music producer, rapper and entertainment business mogul, fast became a reality when he was selected from Coke Studio RAW which gives undiscovered talent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with a top music producer.
As one of the few artists that were chosen Kayrab was teamed up with long-time friend and fellow RAW artist Clu.
Clu is a producer, rapper, singer and songwriter and the two have been friends since high school. The chance of working together on this project was extremely exciting for both of them.
The process of creating the fusion track was fairly smooth and organic for the duo and it was inspired by the chorus that Clu wrote at RAW. Wilson, the RAW producer translated Clu’s lyrics into a melody and the song took its shape from there.
It was an amazing and totally new experience for both artists who found it incredibly inspiring once their creative energies aligned and they were all working in sync for the good of the song. The only negative for Kayrab was that it had to come to an end.
Other artist featured on the Coke Studio included Kabomo, Mpumi, Micasa, Cassper Nyovest, Oliver Mtukudzi, The Mahotella Queens and more.
The last episode of Coke Studio will air on etv tonight at 8:30pm.
