Rivalry in the mid-sized sedan area is becoming strong with manufacturers developing classy and irresistible offers. There are a number of selections to choose from in this segment stretching from the Kia Cerato, Chevrolet Cruze, Toyota Corolla, Opel Astra sedan and now the GWM C50.
GWM has set the bar high with its C50 and I was very impressed with the interior design and performance after driving the vehicle for a week.
The C50 has sufficient space that makes it practical and allows for enough room to move around – especially when you have kids who like to be all over the place. It looks elegant and neat on the inside. On the other hand, the exterior was not as impressive.
All I can say is ‘WOW!’ I didn’t expect to see such a beautiful interior from GWM. The C50 interior looks very elegant. The dashboard is beautifully laid out, looks modern and features a neat digital panel display, Bluetooth technology, CD/radio/MP3 player with USB and auxiliary port. Well done to GWM – I give them five-out-of-five on the interior alone.
The C50 has plenty of legroom in both the front and back. I felt more organised with the side retractable sunglass holder and storage box in the central armrest.
The cargo capacity is humongous. The C50 has a boot capacity of more than 530 litres without even splitting the rear seats.
I love GWM but I must say that they could have improved on the exterior. For such an impressive car one would expect more on the external design – the exterior and interior are two different worlds. They haven’t done that bad though compared their counterparts.
The C50 features 16-inch alloy wheels and twin chrome-tipped exhaust pipes. It is available in white, silver, grey, black and red.
On the road
The C50 handles well on the road and corners. Its take-off speed is satisfactory and has great power once it gains momentum. This lovely sedan features GWM’s new Euro V-compliant GW4G15T 1.5 litre turbo-petrol engine which produces about 93 KW of power at 5 600 rpm.
- Power: 93kW @ 5 600rpm
- Torque: 188Nm at 4500
- 0-100 km/h: 10 seconds
- Top speed:185km/h
- Fuel consumption: 7.4/100km
- Fuel type: Unleaded Petrol
- Fuel tank capacity: 50L
- Price: R234 999
What we like about the car:
- Pure pleasure
- Modern interior design
- Unique features and latest technology
- Comfortable on the road
- Huge cargo space
- It is powerful
- It feels safe
- Great handling on corners
What we don’t like about the car:
- Cloth cover seats
- Exterior doesn’t look that great
The GWM C50 is a true family sedan that combines all elements that a family can desire – pure pleasure, practicality in terms of space, comfort, performance and efficiency with a price tag of R234 990 – I think it’s worth it.
Five-wheel rating: 4.8/5.
