Mi Casa’s group member, J Something, put on an apron and cooked a dinner for Mzansi Life and other guests this week in Johannesburg.
Growing up with parents who work in the hospitality industry, good food has been something that the musician has grown up with.
“I am fortunate in that I get to travel a lot with Mi Casa so I taste many different cuisines around the world and enjoy bringing those flavours home and experimenting with them in my own kitchen,” J said.
While J chopped and sautéed, guests mingled at the Smeg Kitchen in Bryanston and sipped on Oude Meester Franklin cocktails, a drink of ginger ale, a dash of Angostura bitters and a tot of Oude Meester Demant brandy.
“Since brandy is made from grapes, much like wine it also has an intense bouquet and flavours which make it ideal to pair with food,” said Distell brandy ambassador Nick Holdcroft.
“Brandy is an ideal pairing with strong cheeses and also goes well with rich desserts, particularly anything chocolate.”
The quality of South African potstill brandy is of international renown, having won the international “Best Brandy in the World” award at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 11 times in the past 14 years.
The Van Ryn’s 15 year old potstill won the Best Worldwide Brandy trophy at the International Spirits Challenge in 2014.
J’s three course meal was as much of a hit with the guests as his music, the highlight being a ‘guilt-free’ chocolate torte with ice-cream and homemade brandy hot chocolate paired with Van Ryn’s 20 year old.
Of his menu for the evening, J said: “I created dishes that are unpretentious, comforting and warm up our bellies and our hearts; food I enjoy eating and the kind of food I would make for those I love.”
The following is what he prepared for us:
