The GWM M4 compact crossover was well received at the Johannesburg International Motor Show last year. This compact crossover is fun to drive and looks trendy.
Kudos to GWM on the high-tech infotainment system, fresh and sporty design, high ground clearance of 183 mm and good safety features – that sealed it for me.
I was happy to travel a long distance after receiving the car – safety comes first. The M4 boasts an array of technology including Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Disc brakes all-round, rear park assist and Dual SRS front airbags.
For those who are concerned about the colours, the GWM M4is offered in Titanium White, Sky Silver, Pearl Black, Jazz Red, Fashion Orange and Ocean Blue.
The GWM M4 has great features including a neat digital instrumentation panel display, Bluetooth technology, CD/radio/MP3 player with USB and auxiliary ports.
It has a boot capacity of more than 290 litres which can be improved – thanks to its 60/40 split rear bench that is standard across the range.
The GWM M4 is armed with fresh styling, unique features, sporty front grille, edgy chrome, dynamic head and taillights. It looks great.
Its roof rails, the 1.6 inch alloy wheels, front and rear foglamps are standard.
On the road
The GWM M4 has a reasonable power and handles well on the road. Though it is a bit slow to take off, it performs very well once it gains power. It is fitted with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 71 KW at 6 000 rpm.
- Power: 71kW @ 6000rpm
- Torque: 138Nm at 4200
- 0-100 km/h: 13 seconds
- Top speed:170km/h
- Fuel consumption: 7.2/100km
- Fuel type: Unleaded Petrol
- Fuel tank capacity: 45L
- Price: R189 999
What we like about the car:
- The exterior looks great and trendy
- Modern dashboard design
- Unique features and latest technology
- Advanced audio system
- Great ground clearance
What we don’t like about the car:
- Though we like the way the dashboard is laid down, we don’t like the plastic cover
- The right rear seat let us down. We put it down to create more capacity/space but we were unable to put it back up – it locked itself and the manual/user guide doesn’t show how to put it back to normal
- It is a bit slow to take off
The GWM M4 brings a breath of a fresh air. It looks bold, trendy, and fun to drive. What I liked most about this compact crossover was its 183 mm ground clearance that enables you to drive comfortably on any terrain.
The price tag of R189 999 is not bad considering great features – including security – it brings.
Five-wheel rating: 3/5.
